Published

on

Saul “Canelo” Alvarez is no doubt the best and the face of boxing right now and he even
solidified this status by becoming the first-ever undisputed super-middleweight
champion.
Today, we will have a trip down memory lane from his first middleweight belt to owning
all four world boxing championship!
Canelo has been an already successful boxer in the middleweight division having built a
rivalry with Gennady Golovkin. However, he decided to jump in for the super-
middleweight world in 2018.
On December 15, 2018, he challenged British boxer Rocky Fielding (27–1, 15 KOs) for
the WBA (Regular) super middleweight title at Madison Square Garden in New York
City, New York.
On October 17, 2018, DAZN announced that it had secured a five-year, $365 million
deal with lvarez, under which the subscription sports streaming service would broadcast
his next eleven fights in the United States. The arrangement would start with lvarez vs.
Fielding and would replace his HBO contract that had expired (which had also
announced its discontinuation of boxing telecasts). lvarez won the one-sided fight by
technical knockout in the third round after repeatedly knocking out Fielding with body
blows. Referee Ricky Gonzalez called a halt to the match after Fielding was knocked
down for the fourth time.
After this he went back to middleweight and then jumped to light heavyweight to defeat
Sergey Kovalev and then decided to return to super middleweight once again where he
stayed for consecutive fights in order to collect all the belts.
On November 17, lvarez revealed on social media that he would face undefeated WBA
(Super) and The Ring super middleweight champion Callum Smith on December 19,
2020, with the vacant WBC championship on the line as well. The fight took place in
San Antonio, Texas, at the Alamodome. In preparation for the fight, lvarez\’s trainer Eddy
Reynoso said that his man had been training with undefeated heavyweight Frank
Sánchez. On the night, lvarez dominated the action for twelve rounds, injuring Smith\’s
left bicep and winning by unanimous decision with scores of 119–109, 119–109, and
117–111.
